PLAYLIST

PLAYLIST #1. “El mundo como oscilador: grabaciones y estudios de campo” [“The World as an Oscillator: Recordings and Field Studies”]

To open the 2021 season of our cycle, Escuchar: Sonidos visuales [Listening: Visual Sounds], we offer a musical selection based on the idea of the world as an oscillator, as an infinite generator of sounds.

The sounds are filtered and sifted in different ways by artists who have different aesthetics and their own unique means of production. In some cases, we will hear field recordings in their purest or most figurative forms. In others, the recordings are the raw material for works that focus on the subsequent studio process that seeks to transform them in order to create new sounds whose source can no longer be recognised.

This playlist brings together works by Chris Watson, David Toop, Ryoichi Kurokawa, Yannick Dauby and, from Argentina, Cecilia Castro and Pablo Reche.

PLAYLIST #2. Música electroacústica latinoamericana: generaciones mid-high [Latin American electroacoustic music: the mid-high generations]

A look at the rich tradition of Latin American electroacoustic music through the work of composers from the older and mid-high generation.

The playlist includes works by artists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.

PLAYLIST #3: Aire surgente: otras músicas para la infancia [Rising air: other music for childhood]

With the strength and renewal that comes with the advent of spring, we present this new playlist compiled by Jorge Haro and Leandro Frías, the curators of Escuchar [Sonidos visuales] [Listening: Visual Sounds].

It is composed of a selection of children’s music albums and presents diverse sounds and musical directions, classical and contemporary music, and music from different parts of Argentina and other countries.

There is Tierra Verde, from Chaco; an album by the Neuquén Children’s Choir; the minimalist piano of Juan Stewart; the poetry of Children’s Corner by Laura Crespi; the colourful song of Luiz Ribeiro, of Brazil; the contagious compositions of Mattäus Bär of Austria; and two classic songs that will not be easy for the wind to be able to carry away: Canciones para mirar [Songs for looking] by María Elena Walsh, and Cantante y sonante [Singing and sounding] by Conjunto Pro Música of Rosario.

It is a playlist of music of yesterday and today that will delight younger generations and expand the soundtrack of everyday family life.

CONCERTS

Over the course of 2021, the Escuchar [Sonidos visuales] [Listening: Visual Sounds] festival will air a series of concerts recorded in the Auditorium of the Museo Moderno.

Concert #1

Flor de Fuego presents Ventana [Window]

This is an audiovisual performance that presents an everyday landscape created through the meeting of live coding and experiments with a web browser. It uses a dialogue with a computer as a creative window.

To look through the window is to see both within and without. To contemplate a landscape is to make a selection with one’s eye, to pay attention to a point of view, to cut out. To look is to open up just one of so many possibilities.

Concert #2

Francisco Ali-Brouchoud presents Radiación de Shree [Shree Radiation] (2021)

In this second performance Francisco Ali-Brouchoud premieres Radiación de Shree [Shree Radiation] (2021), a work written for the Arp Odissey analogue synthesiser.

The piece aspires to belong to a relatively new genre that could be called “Hindustanoise”, that is, a cross between experimental music and music from the north of India. The genre has its origins in the sound investigations of La Monte Young and was consolidated by the work of Catherine Christer Hennix in 1976. This piece is a tribute to her.

Based on the Shree raga, which is heard in North Indian classical music, Ali-Brouchoud’s Radiación de Shree uses the musical material of Shree, played on an Arp Odissey patch that is specially programmed to recreate the atmosphere of the raga. Throughout the piece, a mass of sound is produced from which unexpected frequencies emerge through clashes, beats and phase shifts, providing an immersive and immanent listening experience.

Concert #3

Guillermina Etkin presents Mutante en el viento [Mutant in the wind].

Visuals: David Barragán (Azul Metano)

In this third concert, Guillermina Etkin presents Mutante en el viento [Mutant in the wind], with visuals by David Barragán (Azul Metano), where “voice and electric metal weave a ghostly and bioluminescent sonic weave. A digital spirit.” Guillermina Etkin

Escuchar [Sonidos visuales] [Listening: Visual Sounds] at KM1 | IN SITU

Launched in 2021, IN-SITU is part of the Escuchar [Sonidos visuales] [Listening: Visual Sounds] programme, a cycle in which we invited two sound artists and an audiovisual producer to present original works.

Pablo Reche, María Emilia Pérez and Arturo Marinho have created two sound pieces and an audiovisual piece using sounds and images they recorded in the neighbourhood of San Telmo and the Museo Moderno itself, in its exhibition galleries, passages and recreation areas, as well as in the spaces used by museum employees that are less visible to the public.

On this occasion, IN SITU presents a visual and sound portrait of the vibrations, sounds, architecture, shapes, lights and shadows of the museum, its people and the neighbourhood that surrounds it.

The result of this project will be published in successive instalments on the museum’s Spotify profile and YouTube channel.

IN SITU #1

Pablo Reche: Espacios [Spaces]

In this instalment of the series, Pablo Reche presents Espacios [Spaces], a sound piece composed from sound fragments captured in some of the different spaces of the museum and sounds from the outside world that can be heard through the walls at a certain time. It preserves the sound imprints of the ghosts and machines that reside in different sectors of the building. The audio samples were treated in two different ways: some were simply equalised at certain frequency bands, and others underwent modulation processes. The result is the creation of a new (virtual) space in the building, that is at once very similar and yet very different from the original.

Pablo Reche (Quilmes, 1970) Experimental musician. In his sound works, Reche alternates between pieces based on field recordings and the manipulation of different sound sources. His main aesthetic-expressive element is noise. He has released several CDs on different music labels in Argentina, Latin America and Europe, and his work has been included on more than thirty compilations in Argentina and Europe. Reche has performed at concerts in Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Canada and the Netherlands. He has participated in prestigious international festivals such as Sónar (Barcelona), Mutek (Montreal), Experimentaclub (Madrid), Observatori (Valencia), LEM (Barcelona) and Festival Vibra (Lima). Reche has also presented sound installations at different cultural centres, such as the Centro Cultural España and the Centro Cultural San Martín, both in Buenos Aires, the Casa de Cultura in Florencio Varela, and as part of the Subsonic project of the Metrovalencia rail system of Valencia, Spain. He has composed music for dance productions at the Centro Cultural San Martín and the Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas. He has also composed pieces and concerts in collaboration with prestigious musicians such as Zbigniew Karkowski, Günter Müller, Jason Kahn, Christof Kurzmann and Alan Courtis. https://www.instagram.com/rechepabnoise https://pabloreche.bandcamp.com

IN SITU #2

María Emilia Pérez: Inflexiones de lo cotidiano [Inflections of the everyday]

This piece is about the experience of listening in the Museo Moderno, a space that seeks to tell stories to its visitors. The internal and external spaces of the building offer a rich and extensive spectrum of sounds.

Eleandro Brunacci collaborated in the recording process for the composition of the piece.

María Emilia Pérez (Venezuela, 1992) trained as a visual artist and graphic designer in Venezuela and completed a diploma in Sound Arts at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín. She has lived in different places throughout Latin America, developing her career as an independent artist, producer and director of various experimental music events. In her work as an artist, she develops her soundscapes, field recordings, audiovisual archives and sound and bioacoustic productions from a perspective that is focused on nature and ecological awareness. She has performed in Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina. She is active in different projects, including Vermillion, where she uses electroacoustic media and sound objects of her own creation. She also participates in different collectives and other projects, including Interspecies (Argentina), Gwykqll (Ecuador) and Epidemia (Mexico). She lives and works in Mar del Plata.
