Given Mildred Burton’s sustained and intimate contact with literature, this book, based on the
exhibition National Fauna, presents a piece of short fiction by Mariana Enriquez especially
written with the works of the exhibition in mind. It also includes a curatorial text by Marcos
Krämer and a biography of the artist.
‘By the river, all the birds that fly around drinking, perching on branches and making that infernal
racket during siesta time… all those birds were once women. Locals and tourists who come to
spend the weekend at the beach drone on about the peacefulness of nature, marvel at the
beautiful paths the creatures trace through the clear sky, and drink mate while they drop bread
crumbs for them to peck. It’s so annoying. Pointless to tell them that the birds aren’t what they
seem, it’d be obvious if only they looked properly into those mad, desperate eyes pleading for
freedom. ’
Mariana Enriquez
‘Mildred Burton has written a grand story of images and bequeathed to us the possibility of
understanding fantasy as a means of being ironic and critical at the same time. She left us a
distinctive way of playing with ideas that allows us to move beyond the borders of the same old
solutions. We must learn from Mildred’s ability to plot the course of animals, flora and nature:
it will place us on a better footing for the future. ’
Marcos Krämer
