This book casts a wide net across the works and archive documentation that featured in the
exhibition Sergio Avello: A Young Multi-Talented Professional at the Museo de Arte Moderno
in 2017. In her curatorial article Sofía Dourron recounts the artist’s turbulent creative life-story
and describes Avello’s multi-faceted personality to convey a broader understanding of the
diverse shadings of an artistic output that reveals the intensity of a very special moment in
Argentinian contemporary art. ‘Sergio Avello expressed what was in the air, reacting to every
stimulus with expansive gestures like concentric ripples, like a DJ who picks and mixes their
own and others’ tunes. He composed situations out of everything he found around him: oils,
people, songs and places. Avello is an immaculate colourist with a fierce eye, an elegant
nomad, a minimalist in dress and words, a cultivator of small pleasures, of excess and
contradiction, an art buff, a fan of artists, a tourist of life. With an enfolding grace that endeared
him to everyone who knew him, he set levity against social tragedy and did so with complete
freedom, freed from any theoretical rigour or formal art and life strategies.’
