Solano López Francisco
El Eternauta, 1958 Tinta sobre papel.

Francisco Solano López (Buenos Aires, October 26, 19281 – Buenos Aires, August 12, 2011) was an Argentine cartoonist and artist. He is widely considered one of the most important cartoonists in Argentine comics, with El Eternauta being his most recognized work.

His duo with screenwriter Héctor Germán Oesterheld (1919-1978) began in 1955, replacing Campani in the Bull Rocket series of Misterix magazine. He was part of Editorial Frontera from the beginning, and always with scripts by Oesterheld he worked on the series Joe Zonda and Rul de la Luna for Frontera magazine, “Rolo el marciano adoptivo” for Hora Cero, plus numerous episodes of Ernie Pike and El Red Notebook. At the publishing house, Oesterheld agreed with the cartoonists about the comics they were working on. Solano López asked to work on a science fiction series but with a more realistic tone than his previous works. This led to the publication of El Eternauta, which although it presents elements of the genre such as extraterrestrial invasions or fantastic weapons, does not emphasize these but rather the reactions of ordinary people to the tragedy described. The series began to be published in Hora Cero weekly on September 4, 1957, and was extended until number 106, two years later. This comic was republished numerous times over time, and Oesterheld even recreated it later with Alberto Breccia.
