Prior Alfredo
En cada sueño habita una pena, 1985, acrylic on canvas, 200 x 185 cm.

(Buenos Aires, 1952)

Self-called as “the most abstract of figurative painters and the most figurative of abstract painters”, Alfredo Prior explores in his paintings atmospheric and chromatic textures, sometimes starring bears, children, rabbits, chinese, snowmen and other characters that make up his visual fables.
Prior is a key figure of the generation of artists that emerged in the 1980s with the recovery of democracy in Argentina, with whom he participated in numerous joint projects and in 1985 represented Argentina at the XVIII Biennial of Sao Paulo.
Trained in literature, his passion for books is revealed in his paintings, as well as his interest in oriental culture and music. The apocryphal quotation and the adoption of heteronyms is a constant feature in his work, which the artist has defined as neo-Mannerist, full of references to history and universal culture. In addition to painting and drawing, he has worked in other media and disciplines: he has made installations, videos and several performances about 20th century artists such as Duchamp, Pollock and Beuys; he has published books of poems and fictional texts and is a member of the experimental music group Super siempre.
As he once said: “Painting is for my journey, a journey in the cradle, which is a coffin, which is a boat, which is a fish”.
He has presented anthological exhibitions in the most important museums of the country and has exhibited his work in Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Venezuela, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Egypt, Japan, among other places. His works are part of numerous public and private collections in Argentina and abroad. He lives and works in Buenos Aires.
