Furtado Dolores
Dissolution, 2021, Paper pulp, Variable measurements, (Installation view at MoMA PS1, 2021).

(Buenos Aires, 1977)

She works mainly in the field of sculpture and has made numerous site-specific monumental works. Her interest focuses on matter exposed in a raw and naked form: in her works matter becomes body.
Using a wide diversity of techniques – such as resin, cement, plaster, ceramic, bronze and paper pulp – formats and scales, her sculptures underline the process, through tactile marks, impressions of objects, mold seams, discolorations, drips and cracks. In her own words: “Each step of the process adds a new layer of information, and the final piece is not a pre-designed object, but only the result of a series of actions with an open ending. I think of my sculptures as documentation of process and action. Like an alchemist, my practice is based on the idea of transforming materials into different states. I believe that materials are carriers of meaning and are spiritually charged. In my world, matter
and spirit are the same thing in different forms.
