Diana Dowek (Buenos Aires, Argentina, January 1, 1942) is an Argentine, feminist painter, recognized for her artistic career linked to social and political conflicts from a critical perspective. She was recognized with the 2012 Konex Prize for her career in painting during the five-year period 2002 – 2006. Dowek was born in the city of Buenos Aires on January 1, 1942. She studied at the Manuel Belgrano National School of Fine Arts and at the Prilidiano Pueyrredón National School of Fine Arts. Between 1979 and 1983 she was part of the Argentine artistic group “Postfiguración”, formed by Jorge Glusberg, along with Norberto Gómez, Alberto Heredia, Jorge Álvaro, Mildred Burton and Elsa Soibelman. She has a long history as a civil rights activist. Her work is directly related to the issue of human rights in Argentina. Especially with respect to the issue of the repression of the Argentine military dictatorship. As a human rights activist she was selected by Amnesty International to use two of her works in the organization’s screen prints. In 2013 she published a book about her career and her work; “Painting is a battlefield” where she tells about her career and her work, after obtaining a scholarship from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Dowek is a member of Solidarity Plastic Artists and a founding member of the Association of Visual Artists of the Argentine Republic.
