Iris Scaccheri (1939-2014) was born in the city of La Plata. Since she was a child she took Arabic, folk, Spanish and classical dance classes. At the age of 17 she traveled to Uruguay to train with Inge Bayerthal – a German dancer and teacher, disciple of Rudolf von Laban – who taught dance classes based on the Conscious Gymnastics method. She attended the School of Fine Arts in La Plata, the School of Classical Dance of the Argentine Theater and was part of the group directed by Dore Hoyer with whom she danced, in 1961, the works Cadena de fugas and La idea at the Teatro Colón. During her career she established herself as a great international leader in modern dance. She developed as an interpreter of her own choreographies that she presented in Buenos Aires, especially at the San Martín Theater and at international festivals and important theaters in England and France. Her practice moved away from the most schematic forms of modern dance, giving rise to a body free of ties and deeply emotional that alternated between wild and subtle gestures.
