Carlos Luis García Bes was born in Salta on August 30, 1914 and died in the same city on November 17, 1978. He spent his childhood and formative years in Buenos Aires, where he studied drawing and painting in fine arts schools, having He studied with Emilio Centurión and upon completing his academic training in 1942 he chose to return to his hometown. He held individual exhibitions in Salta, Mar del Plata, Montpellier (France), Tucumán, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Jujuy and Buenos Aires and in numerous group exhibitions. In the 1940s, García Bes began the revaluation of the tradition of Indigenous America by rescuing its forms and planimetric spaces to represent the ancient stories and legends of the native peoples. Becoming a tapestry artist was a deliberate act of complex cultural identification. García Bes discovered in textiles the noble fiber that literally and conceptually woven American history. He founded and directed the Tomás de Cabrera Provincial School of Fine Arts, he was director of Culture of Salta, member and advisor of craft fairs, delegate of the National Fund for the Arts, jury of plastic and craft arts salons, exhibitor in galleries and museums of the country and abroad.
