Nosotros no sab\u00edamos<\/em> [<\/strong>We didn\u00b4t know<\/em>]<\/strong><\/p>

This is an incomplete compilation of some of the news published in the 1976 newspapers about the early phases of the repression unleashed by Videla\u2019s junta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These are the news stories that were able to slip through the censor, or were allowed to pass the censor, as a means of spreading fear. Whilst they are far from covering all of the crimes committed by our armed forces, they give some idea of the atmosphere that hung over the population, as well as the extent of knowledge possessed by those who dismissed such crimes with the phrase \u2018there must be a reason for it\u2019: this was the new \u2018Criminal Code\u2019 of the repressors and their followers, an expression that, after the trials, would be replaced with \u2018we didn\u2019t know\u2019.<\/span><\/p>

Missing here \u2013 though they will be added \u2013 are the reports documenting the complicity of a large part of the Church; a complicity that continued when the Church sought a pardon for those convicted, and which came to the fore once again in October 1991, when Nuncio Calabresi invited them (then pardoned but not acquitted) to join Cardinal Quarracino in celebrating the thirteenth anniversary of John Paul II\u2019s papacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Four copies of this material, compiled in 1976, were published at that time in Brazil; another three were published in 1984, also in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil; and another four were published as part of the <\/span>500 a\u00f1os de represi\u00f3n<\/span><\/i> [<\/span>500 Years of Repression<\/span><\/i>] exhibit at the Centro Recoleta in August 1992.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Questa \u00e8 una raccolta incompleta di articoli di giornale pubblicati nel 1976, che documentano le prime fasi della repressione messa in atto dalla dittatura di Videla.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Sono le notizie che sono riuscite a eludere il filtro della censura, o che sono state lasciate circolare come messaggere del terrore. Sebbene non rappresentino affatto tutti i crimini commessi dalle nostre Forze Armate, rendono un’idea del clima in cui viveva la gente e del livello di consapevolezza di coloro che li giustificavano con la frase “Un motivo ci sar\u00e0!”, il nuovo Codice Penale dei repressori e dei loro seguaci. Un’espressione che, dopo i processi, \u00e8 stata sostituita da un\u2019altra: “Noi non lo sapevamo”.<\/span><\/p>

Non sono inclusi – ma verranno aggiunti – i resoconti che documentano la complicit\u00e0 di gran parte della Chiesa, complicit\u00e0 che va avanti quando chiede la grazia per i condannati, e che si rivela ancora quando il Nunzio Calabresi li invita, graziati ma non assolti, a brindare con il Cardinale Quarracino, in occasione del tredicesimo anniversario del pontificato di Giovanni Paolo II, nell’ottobre del 1991.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Questo materiale, compilato nel 1976, viene pubblicato all\u2019epoca in quattro copie in Brasile, altre tre nel 1984 a San Paolo, Brasile, e altre quattro in occasione della mostra \u201c500 anni di repressione\u201d, che si tiene nell\u2019agosto 1992 al Centro Recoleta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
