With the premiere of El desatino [The Blunder], in 1965, the playwright Griselda Gambaro (Buenos Aires, 1928) produced a decisive break from the male realist poetics that dominated the Buenos Aires theatre of the 1960s. This play ignited a heated debate between Realists and Absurdists which ran for the rest of the decade. Accused at the time of being a \u2018foreignising\u2019, \u2018depoliticised\u2019 \u2018copy of the European absurd\u2019, El desatino ushered in an anti-naturalist line of enormous consequence for Argentinian theatre. Gambaro\u2019s explosive production opens as follows: \u2018Alfonso wakes with a black iron contraption, some 40 cm long, attached to his foot. He tries unsuccessfully to move the device.
