A Brief History of the Moderno Collection<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The collection of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires was first assembled by its original directors, Rafael Squirru, Hugo Parpagnoli and Guillermo Whitelow. It includes more than 8000 works of modern and contemporary Argentine and international art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and features outstanding pieces from the 1950s \u2013 when the museum was founded \u2013 through to today, keeping in line with its mission to always remain at the forefront of the art world. It is also home to important graphic and industrial design collections.<\/span><\/p>

From the first moments of his tenure as director of the museum, <\/span>Rafael Squirru<\/b> set about building a collection of works from donations and acquisitions. In order to bring his project to fruition, he supported artists who were just coming onto the scene and who had an unconventional aesthetic point of view. Little by little, he brought together the exhibitions and acquisitions of works that would become part of the Moderno’s collection. In 1959, he received the first donations of works by Uruguayan artists and finalized the acquisition of works by <\/span>Alberto Greco<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Kenneth Kemble<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Luis Alberto Wells<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Luis Felipe No\u00e9<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Miguel \u00c1ngel Vidal<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Eduardo Mac Entyre<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Raquel Forner<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Antonio Berni<\/b>, and many others.<\/span><\/p>

In 1963, Hugo Parpagnoli took over as director of the museum and continued Squirru’s mission to encourage the entry of works into the collection that represented modern art. Among other items, he acquired a large number of prints by\u00a0<\/span>Pablo Picasso<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Henri Matisse<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Andr\u00e9 Derain<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Hans Arp<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Joan Mir\u00f3<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Francis Picabia<\/b>, <\/span>Paul Klee<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Marc Chagall<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/b>. The Moderno\u2019s collection grew with additional works by artists such as <\/span>Alberto Heredia<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Juan Carlos Castagnino<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Le\u00f3n Ferrari<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>V\u00edctor Magari\u00f1os<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Manolo Millares<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Emilio Renart<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Rub\u00e9n Santanton\u00edn<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Ernesto Deira<\/b> and\u00a0<\/span>Jorge de la Vega<\/b>, along with funding from the <\/span>Fondo Nacional de las Artes<\/span><\/i> (National Endowment for the Arts). <\/span>The museum\u2019s holdings continued to expand over the years. Under the two directorships of Guillermo Whitelow (1971-1973 and 1977-1983), substantial donations were received, such as in 1980 and 1981, when the private collection of Dr. Ignacio Pirovano was donated to the museum by his sister, Josefina Pirovan de Mihura.<\/span><\/p>

This substantial collection of 59 works of modern art by national and international artists includes seven pieces by <\/span>George Vantongerloo<\/b>, another by\u00a0<\/span>Josef Albers<\/b>, serigraphs by <\/span>Piet Mondrian<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Francis Picabia<\/b>\u00a0as well as other artists, such as <\/span>Tom\u00e1s Maldonado<\/b>. \u201cI have thought a lot about your collection and I am enthusiastic about the idea that it could be the basis of our future Museum of Modern Art\u201d (letter from Tom\u00e1s Maldonado to Ignacio Pirovano, July 14, 1954).<\/span><\/p>

In 1999, MAMBA’s Argentine Photography collection was created, which seeks to emphasize the most innovative photographic language. It is the first collection to focus on the photographic arts of Argentina, and contains approximately 300 works. These include photographs and artistic creations using photographic media, spanning more than half a century of production. Works by the following artists can be found in the collection: <\/span>Anne Marie Heinrich<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Anatole Saderman<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Pedro Otero<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Grete Stern<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Jorge Roiger<\/b>, <\/span>Sameer Makarius<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Horacio Coppola<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Sara Facio<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Julie M\u00e9ndez Escurra<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Dalila Puzzovio<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Juan Travnik<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Alicia Sanguinetti<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Helen Zout<\/b>,<\/span>\u00a0Marcelo Grossman<\/b>, <\/span>Gabriel Valansi<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Leandro Katz<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Alejandro Kuropatwa<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Liliana Porter<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Marie Orensanz<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Miguel Rothchild<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Ar Detroy<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Graciela Hasper<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>David Lamelas<\/b>, among others. The collection continued to grow over the years that followed, thanks to contributions from artists and collectors.<\/span><\/p>

In the year 2000, under the direction of Laura Buccellato, the museum received a bequest from <\/span>Alberto Heredia<\/b>: a collection of 500 works by the artist, by other Argentine artists, and of his own apartment, located at 828 Avenida Caseros. His library, documentary archive and personal objects were recently catalogued and incorporated into the museum\u2019s historical archive.<\/span>
<\/span>Buccellato also created the Industrial Design and Graphic Design collection, under the guidance of <\/span>Ricardo Blanco<\/b>\u00a0(1940- 2017). At the same time, she took the necessary steps to receive the donation of a group of works presented at the 2002 exhibition, <\/span>\u00daltimas tendencias <\/span><\/i>[<\/span>Recent trends<\/span><\/i>].<\/span><\/p>

The Museo Moderno collection continues to grow. Today, under the directorship of Victoria Noorthoorn, a procurement program has been created based on the Moderno’s collection and it has received substantial donations.<\/span>
<\/span>In 2014, the Fundaci\u00f3n Augusto y Le\u00f3n Ferrari Arte y Acervo (FALFAA) donated 72 works on paper by <\/span>Le\u00f3n Ferrari<\/b>. In 2017, the museum received a generous donation from the Colecci\u00f3n Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) of eight works of art by <\/span>Ernesto Ballesteros<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Alejandro Corujeira<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Mat\u00edas Duville<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Eduardo Navarro<\/b>, <\/span>Elisabet S\u00e1nchez<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Judi Werthein<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
