The Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires is pleased to present an exhibition by the young artist Clara Esborraz (Rafaela, Santa Fe, 1991) featuring a set of drawings made especially for the show.
Produced with everyday materials such as a biro and ordinary paper, Esborraz’ drawings feature scenes in which unremarkable objects and spaces are slowly transformed into a surreal fantasy: a fish might cry, a horse leap out of a book or a lamp start to sweat. Her images thus create a new space between the reality of domestic objects and the imaginary world of their actions, simultaneously conveying humour, gravity and a sense of crisis.
In Esborraz’ work, drawings are a very direct and intuitive means of expression, an emotional statement about how she experiences the world. Each piece of paper bears the evidence of her working process, their unevenness and lumps revealing how long she spent working on them as they crinkle and deform just like the characters they depict.
In this exhibition, Clara Esborraz invites us to think of her works as little openings onto a territory where the harsh laws of reality make way for a more fragile conception of everyday life.
Clara Esborraz (Rafaela, Santa Fe, 1991) has a degree in Fine Art from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario. In 2015 she received a grant from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes to take part in the workshop “La Basurita”, she took part in the 2017 Artists’ Programme at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella and in 2018, she was invited to the URRA Tigre Residency.
Her work has featured in numerous solo and collective exhibitions, most recently: Geometría Pueblo Nuevo [New Town Geometry], PIEDRAS (2018); the 72nd National Salon of Rosario, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Rosario (2018); the Itaú Prize for Visual Art, Casa Nacional del Bicentenario (2018); Dibujo para hablar más lento [I Draw to Speak More Slowly], Centro Cultural de la Memoria Haroldo Conti (2018); Supersimétrica [Supersymmetry], Matadero, Madrid (2018) and La Torpeza Emocional: Ensayo I [Emotional Clumsiness: Rehearsal I], Piedras (2017).
Her series “Felices 27 vidas con sus respectivas muertes” [27 Happy Lives and their Respective Deaths] was selected to feature in the “Convocatoria Latinoamericana de Historieta Trans” (Editorial Municipal de Rosario) as part of an anthology alongside 22 other works. Esborraz has recently received the Encouragement Award in the 2018 Fondo Nacional de los Artes Awards for the Visual Arts.
She is a cofounder of the independent publishing project “Fuerza y Posibilidad Ediciones”, which since 2014 has published experimental works by individuals and collectives.
